BEAUTIFUL HUTCH'S POOL IS A POPULAR SWIMMING HOLE .
Climb almost 0.5 mile on well-graded stairs and switchbacks to the intersection
with Phoneline Trail #27. This short section is the most heavily used, with shuttle
riders experiencing a taste of desert hiking and Phoneline Trail users making a final
descent to the road. The views back down Sabino Canyon, with the Phoneline Trail
clinging high to the left side, are increasingly impressive as you climb. At the junc-
tion, make a hard left to continue northwest along the Sabino Canyon Trail.
The trail continues to climb, but the switchbacks become less frequent. After 0.4
mile the route flattens and follows high up the right-hand side of the canyon, with
good views of the canyon below and glimpses of Sabino Creek. After a few hundred
flat yards, the trail crosses over the top of a large rock outcrop, then diverges away
from the canyon to the east, passing through a landscape of grasses, bushes, spring
flowers, and occasional yuccas and agaves, but relatively few cacti.
Soon the trail swings back to the north, still mainly flat; about 1 mile from the
rock outcrop, it begins to drop toward an intersection of streams coming from several
small canyons and flowing into Sabino Creek. A sign indicates West Fork Trail #24,
