Overview
Hutch's Pool comes a distinct second to Seven Falls as a destination for water-seeking
hikers in the Sabino Canyon area, but it ranks first as a year-round water attraction—it
doesn't dry up completely. The first section from the trailhead, the only steep one, is
rewarded with great views back down Sabino Canyon. Continuing on, the trail en-
counters a variety of landscapes, including a steep canyon and high desert grasslands.
Route Details
Beginning from the last shuttle stop, Sabino Canyon Trail #23 climbs via wide stairs
to…hey, not so fast. On a recent hike I almost stepped on a rattlesnake curled up on
the stairs, less than 100 yards away from the end of the road. I waited awhile and then
walked around what I guessed to be the back of the snake—hard to tell when they're
coiled up. You need to keep your eyes open, even if you just got off the shuttle. Of
course, I've hiked on these stairs many times without seeing a rattler, so you shouldn't
think this particular trail is any more likely to provide you with a snake sighting. That
could happen on almost any hike in this topic, so be aware.
