JUNCTION OF THE DOUGLAS SPRING AND CARRILLO TRAILS
Tough, fit hikers can continue south on the Douglas Spring Trail for about 2.4
miles to Cow Head Saddle at about 6,150 feet, and beyond. With a car shuttle, you
could take the Tanque Verde Ridge Trail from Cow Head another 11.6 miles—this is
a 20.5-mile all-day hike that I did once, 30 years ago. Most hikers will turn around
and retrace their footsteps to the trailhead.
Nearby Attractions
Though this topic is a guide for day hikers, it's worth noting that some of Tucson's
best backcountry backpacking is found in Saguaro National Park's Rincon Mountain
(East) District. The entire park has only six small backcountry-camping areas, all in
this district. Douglas Spring is the closest to a parking area and gives access to trails
crossing the high Rincon peaks. A permit is necessary, available from the visitor cen-
