Overview
The upper section of the Nature Trail seems almost forgotten by hikers who are head-
ing for the adjoining trailheads leading to the summit of Mount Wrightson, and there
are relatively few people to be seen. Along the high trail, wooden benches are stra-
tegically placed for a relaxing rest and some of Madera Canyon's best views of Mount
Wrightson. After undulating high above the valley, the route plunges down to Madera
Creek, where a very popular trail parallels both the creek and the road but is just far
enough away from the latter for birdsong to be heard.
Route Details
Begin from the west side of the extensive Mount Wrightson Picnic Area, at the far
south terminus of the Madera Canyon Road. The trailhead is in the first parking lot
on the right as you enter the picnic and parking area; you'll find a map board at the
beginning of the trail. (Several other trails depart from this parking area, so make sure
you're on the right one.)
From the trailhead, turn left (south), walk about 10 yards to cross a usually dry
stream bed, and then switchback to the north, with the stream bed below to your right.
After 100 yards, climb to your left away from the stream on a broken concrete trail.
Soon you'll see the Chuparosa Inn across the stream to your right while you climb a
little higher.
The trail quickly flattens and contours to the northwest, with Madera Creek drop-
ping away below you. Although it seems fairly flat, the route actually undulates as it
