In-Depth Information
EASTERN COLLARED LIZARD
The narrow trail continues climbing Pontatoc Ridge for several hundred yards to
a sign that oddly proclaims, “Dogs Prohibited Beyond This Point.” (Dogs weren't al-
lowed at the beginning of the trail, so I'm not sure how they got here to be prohibited
again.) Above you, three cave-like openings to mine shafts are open but not main-
tained, and may be dangerous. The trail ends here, but you can scramble up short,
steep, loose paths to the mine openings and enter—a flashlight is useful. The mines,
worked from 1906 to 1917, yielded small amounts of copper and silver.
Any exploration beyond the end of the trail is entirely at your own risk.
