About a mile before the trailhead, Sabino Canyon Parkway, the approach road, passes
through the village of Summerhaven . Almost half of the village was destroyed in the
summer of 2003, when about 340 homes and businesses burned during the disastrous
Aspen Fire. Summerhaven continues to recover and offers a couple of eateries and a
village store-cum-gift shop, but no gas station.
South of the village, several parking lots adjoin the uppermost reaches of Sabino
Creek and provide access to many cool, shady picnic areas with tables and barbecue
grills. These parking lots serve as overflow parking for the nearby Marshall Gulch/
Aspen trailhead. The road and parking areas close during winter snows.
Directions
Follow the directions for Hike 12, Babad Do'ag Trail , to reach Milepost 0 on Mount
Lemmon Road (Catalina Highway). From Milepost 0, drive about 25 miles to the
village of Summerhaven and continue another mile to the Marshall Gulch trailhead.
Note that there is no gas in Summerhaven, so make sure you've left Tucson with sev-
eral gallons in your tank.
