5.5 Conclusions
In this chapter, a summary of techniques used for characterization of en-
capsulated cells is provided. The rationale behind the utility of the techniques
is discussed and some examples from the literature are given. While em-
ploying the imaging and spectroscopic techniques, it is important to under-
stand both the techniques and material used for coating. The right choice of
the characterization techniques will not only help to obtain more reliable
information but also will enhance the value of the study. Although all imaging
and characterization techniques used in the current studies are conventional
techniques, it is also possible to employ unconventional techniques such as
NSOM and TERS, which may provide additional valuable information to
understand the nature of the interaction of the materials placed onto the
living cell surface.
