In-Depth Information
Ojo Caliente is the most accessible of the River Group of hot springs and small geysers.
Bicyclists and hikers can continue on to rejoin the Grand Loop Road less than 4 miles
(6.4 km) from here.
One of the two wheelchair-accessible campsites in Yellowstone is at Goose Lake, a
little more than a mile (less than 2 km) from the turning circle and parking area.
Continuing south on foot (extension of Fountain Flats Drive)
Ojo Caliente Spring is a beautiful greenish blue to deep blue hot spring (its color depends
on the time of day). Stay a safe distance away: the thin silica crust that overlies the superheated
water can be dangerous. Ojo Caliente means “hot spring” in Spanish.
The area to the east of Ojo Caliente and the river, including the explosion crater called
Pocket Basin, is too full of hazards to enter without a ranger or other knowledgeable person.
Visitors have been severely burned in this area. One person died and two were seriously in-
jured from falling into one of these hot springs in the summer of 2000.
