Shooting star
Isa Lake on the Continental Divide west of West Thumb has a splendid covering of yellow
or Rocky Mountain pond lilies (Nuphar polysepalum), as do several ponds around Norris
Junction. Native American Indians roasted the large seeds and ate them like popcorn, and the
rootstocks are food for muskrats. Pond lilies are pictured on pages 43 and 108.
Yellow composite flowers are many and hard to distinguish. Two common ones that have
distinctive leaves are heartleaf arnica (Arnica cordifolia) and arrowleaf balsamroot (Balsam-
orhiza sagittata).
