Everts' thistle
he Everts thistle (Cirsium scariosum) commemorates Truman Everts, the man who sur-
vived—in part by eating its roots—for 37 days when lost in Yellowstone in 1870. Peeled stems
and roots are both edible.
Shooting star (Dodecatheon pauciflorum), like the house-plant cyclamen, has its petals flexed
backwards and its dark, pollen-producing stamens projecting forward.
Y ELLOW
Monkeylower
Yellow monkeyflower (Mimulus guttatus) thrives in the steamy atmosphere of hot spring
basins, but the heat restricts it to 2 to 3 inches (5-7 cm) high there.
