Wyoming territorial law becomes the
law of Yellowstone to help curb vandal-
ism, poaching, and lawlessness.
Frank J. Haynes opens a photo studio at
Mammoth.
George Eastman devises a way to coat
photographic paper in long rolls, an in-
vention soon to replace the wet glass
plate process used since the 1850s.
1886
The U.S. Cavalry arrives in the park in
August to bring order.
1886-87
First winter tour of the park, during
which Haynes takes the first winter
photographs of Yellowstone.
The Rockies and Great Plains experien-
ce one of the most severe winters in his-
tory, one that kills some 60 percent of
range cattle.
1888
Dry film and the inexpensive Kodak
camera (“You Press the Button, We Do
the Rest”) make amateur photography
possible and then increasingly popular.
Montana becomes the 41 st U.S. state.

Trout are first stocked in Yellowstone's
so-called barren waters.
