In-Depth Information
At Undine Falls even the power of water cannot erode the lava very fast.
5.0/13.1 Trail to Wraith Falls on Lupine Creek. If you're here in early to mid summer, take
the time to traverse the half-mile (0.8 km) trail through the meadow to the falls, where you
may see a profusion of wildflowers.
The falls itself drops over smooth rock about 90 feet (27 m), sometimes with only a trickle
of water. One meaning of wraith, “a barely visible vaporous column,” applies well to Wraith
Falls.
History of the Lava Creek Trail
From mile 1.7/16.4 to mile 4.4/13.7, the road follows Lava Creek. Across the creek to the
north, you can catch glimpses of the old Bannock Indian Trail that became a road soon
after mining began at Cooke City in the 1870s. The Bannock made an annual trip to hunt
buffalo, traveling from their winter home in Idaho across what is now the northern part of
Yellowstone to Wyoming east of park territory. They followed Lava Creek and continued
eastward across Blacktail Deer Plateau.
