In-Depth Information
Lacy ribbons of water fall over Gibbon Falls.
7.3/6.1 Caldera Rim picnic area. The road closely follows the very edge between
two distinctive areas: to the east and south the Yellowstone Caldera explosion created a huge
cavity, not visible because lava filled it in. Look north to see the cliff composed of tephra from
that caldera explosion.
8.2/5.2 The name Iron Spring refers to a cold water spring half a mile above Gib-
bon Falls and west of the old road and river. The spring was obliterated by road building in
the twentieth century. Stretching out west of that spring is an intriguingly named area, Secret
Valley. In the 1949 Haynes Guide, Haynes wrote that Secret Valley “widens out above the road
and is a fine grazing area for wild animals.”
8.4/5.0 Gibbon River Bridge, which replaced the old bridge in 2010.
