In-Depth Information
Until 1995, the road around Bunsen Peak was open to automobile traffic, but it's now
available only for biking and hiking. The former road goes about 6 miles (10 km) around Bun-
sen Peak to end at a maintenance and residential area near Mammoth. After about 3 quite
level miles (5 km) through sage flats, the old road begins the 800-foot (250 m) descent to the
Mammoth area.
Electric Peak is the highest mountain seen from Swan Lake Flat.
Hikers can climb Bunsen Peak either from the Bunsen Peak Trail near the parking area or
by taking the former road for about 3 miles (5 km), then climbing up from near the Osprey
Falls Trailhead (see below). Either way, the elevation gain to the top is more than 1,300 feet
(400 m).
