Moss campion
In July and early August, the wildflowers are marvelous; stop at turnouts to get a closer
look. It's hard to believe the flowers can grow in such a hostile environment, with about a
45-day growing season, but they somehow survive, clinging to the small amount of soil above
the bedrock. Where there's a bit more soil, permafrost lurks just below their roots. This is
arctic tundra. Nevertheless, you can find miniature and brilliantly colored flowers, includ-
ing forget-me-nots, bluebells, moss campions, and occasionally the bitterroot, state flower of
Montana.
