In-Depth Information
Canyon Hotel was built in the wintertime. Supplies were hauled the 40 miles from the
Gardiner railhead on sleds pulled by six horses. Over 100 carpenters worked seven days a
week to make it ready for the 1911 tourist season.
Elegant Canyon Hotel opened for business in 1911 (Elliot W. Hunter photo).
Next around the loop are a sporting goods store and a general store with lunch
counter.
Continuing around the loop are the Canyon Lodge facilities. There
are three places to eat: cafeteria, snack bar, and dining room, then a cocktail lounge and gift
shop. Next come the registration building for the many motel-like cabins (opened in 1957)
and two small 1990s lodges (Cascade and Dunraven), and finally the post office. Wheelchair-
accessible restrooms are available at the cafeteria and the cocktail lounge.
The only picnic spots near Canyon Village are at the east end of Chittenden Bridge
(map, page 179 ) , 1.3 and 2.4 miles north of Canyon Junction (map, page 214 ) , and 3.0 miles
south of the junction (map, page 172 ).
A pleasant, paved trail about one-half mile (0.8 km) long leads through the woods from
the ā€œPā€ loop of cabins (next to P23-26 ) to the Grand View area, which can also be reached by
the one-way North Rim Drive.
