Experience the thrilling power of falling water at the Brink of Lower Falls.
Just east of here was a spot called Moran Point, where artist Thomas Moran sketched in
the 1870s. (Despite its name, Artist Point across the canyon was not Moran's sketching spot.)
Moran subsequently painted his huge masterpiece of the Grand Canyon, which hung for
many years in the nation's capitol and now belongs to the U.S. Department of the Interior. The
point had become inaccessible by the mid 1900s.
(0.9) The colors are decidedly photogenic at Grand View*, the next-to-last stop
along the road. There is no view of either falls at this point.
(1.3) Inspiration Point side road (two way). On the way to Inspiration Point, you'll see
the granite-gneiss Glacial Boulder [GEO.13], as large as a small house and surrounded by
trees. Because there's no bedrock like this anywhere near, geoscientists have concluded that
boulders like this one must have been carried from the Beartooth Mountains about 40 miles
(64 km) north long ago by a glacier.
he strenuous Seven-Mile Hole Trail leads to the bottom of the canyon from Glacial
Boulder. The “hole” refers to a good fishing spot in the Yellowstone River. The trail is not quite
7 miles (11 km) long, but it's very steep.
Less ambitious hikers might park near the boulder and use the Seven-Mile Hole Trail
only to hike along the canyon rim. It's a pleasant 2.5 miles (4 km) round trip and includes a
