WORTH A DETOUR
KUALA GANDAH ELEPHANT CONSERVATION CENTRE
Many tour operators in Kuala Lumpur offer day-trip packages (for around RM200) to the Kuala Gandah
Elephant Conservation Centre ( 09-279 0391; www.wildlife.gov.my/webpagev4_en/bhg_ekogandah.html ;
Kuala Gandah, Lanchang; entry by donation; 10am-4.45pm) about 150km east of KL.
This is the base for the Department of Wildlife and National Parks' Elephant Relocation Team, which helps
capture and relocate rogue elephants from across Southeast Asia to other suitable habitats throughout the penin-
sula, such as at Taman Negara. Most of the elephants at the centre are work elephants from Myanmar, India and
Thailand.
Visitors are first shown a video (viewings at 1pm, 1.30pm and 3.45pm daily, also 12.30pm Saturday and
Sunday) about the elephants' plight, then can watch while the handlers wash down the big guys and feed them
fruit (2pm Saturday to Thursday, 2.45pm Friday).
