WORTH A DETOUR
MID VALLEY
Like a fortress island surrounded by concentric moats of highways and rail tracks, Mid Valley is a two-tower
complex anchored by two giant malls: Mid Valley Megamall ( www.midvalley.com.my ; Lingkaran Syed Putra;
10am-10pm; Mid Valley) and its luxe sibling Gardens Mall ( www.thegardensmall.com.my / ; Mid Valley
City, Lingkaran Syed Putra; 10am-10pm; Mid Valley), which also offers a good top-end hotel and ser-
viced apartments. The KL Komuter Mid Valley station makes getting here a cinch. There are also Rapid KL buses
to Chinatown and a free shuttle bus to Bangsar Light Rail Transit (LRT) station.
Eating & Drinking
There are food courts and a multitude of cafes and restaurants in both malls. Should the enclosed mall environ-
ment start getting to you, take a breather on the road separating the Megamall from Gardens Mall where there are
several restaurants and cafes with outdoor seating including the Library (
2282 6001; www.thelibrary.my ;
mains RM25-55; noon-midnight), which has live music in the evenings.
The Gardens' most classy restaurant and wine bar is Sage ( 2268 1328; www.sagekl.com ; Level 6, Gardens
Residences, Mid Valley, Jln Syed Putra; set lunch/dinner RM100/175; noon-2pm & 6-10.30pm Mon-Fri,
6-10.30pm only Sat), offering inventive cuisine using high-quality ingredients, along with a panoramic view
across to Bangsar. More affordable is the Japanese restaurant Yuzu ( 2284 7663; 3rd fl, Gardens Mall; set
meals from RM25; 11am-10pm). The pictures in the menu do look better than what you get but portions are
large and the prices are right.
Also in the Gardens is the top clubbing venue Vertigo ( 010-215 9701; www.facebook.com/Ver-
tigoClubKL ; 6th fl, The Gardens, Mid Valley City; 9pm-3am), which promotes itself as the epitome of chic
and exclusivity and is popular with a monied youthful crowd.
Shopping
Mega is the only way to describe this complex, where you could easily lose yourself for a day or two: it's an ideal
place to head if there's a tropical downpour or you just need to escape the heat for a few hours of air-con shop-
ping, but do avoid it on the weekends and holidays if you're not into crowds.
Mid Valley Megamall alone has some 430 shops and restaurants as well as an 18-screen cinema, a bowling al-
ley, a huge food court and even a colourful Hindu temple. One unusual emporium is the World of Feng Shui
( www.wofs.com ; 3rd fl, Mid Valley Megamall), specialising in goods to balance the positive energy in your life.
If the Megamall is proving too plebeian for your shopping tastes, luxury brands are in abundance in the con-
nected Gardens Mall. There are even concierge-attended toilets (RM5 entry)! Anchored by Isetan and Robinsons
department stores, here you'll also find many lovely fashion emporiums, including the funky unisex designs of
local lad Key Ng ( www.keyng.com.my ; Gardens Mall), an art gallery, another multiplex and the spa and beauty
floor.
Activities
Apart from going to the movies, there's a 38-lane bowling alley Cosmic Bowl ( 2287 8280;
www.cosmicbowl.com.my ; 3rd fl, Mid Valley Megamall; admission depending on time of day RM5-7;
11am-1am Sun-Thu, to 2am Fri & Sat). Megakidz (
2282 9300; www.megakidz.com.my ; 3rd fl, Mid Valley
