KL Bird Park
This fabulous aviary ( 2272 1010; www.klbirdpark.com ; Jln Cenderawasih; adult/child RM48/38;
9am-6pm) brings together some 200 species of (mostly) Asian birds flying free beneath an
enormous canopy. Star attractions include ostriches, hornbills, eagles, flamingos and par-
rots. It's worth getting to the park for feeding times (hornbills 11.30am, eagles 2.30pm) or
the bird shows (12.30pm and 3.30pm), which feature plenty of parrot tricks to keep
youngsters amused.
Perdana Botanical Garden & Around
The vast Perdana Botanical Garden ( 2021 0812; www.klbotanicalgarden.gov.my ; Persiaran Mahameru;
7am-8pm) S F is planted with a wide variety of native and overseas plants, trees and
shrubs. Sections are dedicated to rare fruit trees, herbs, heliconias, ferns and cycads
among other species. At the park's north end there's an excellent children's playground
and near the lake is a deer park , home to mouse deer and spotted deer. Contact the park to
book onto a free guided walk (8am and 10am Sunday).
The park is halfway through a major renovation. New features such as an ornamental
waterfall and a rebuilt ampitheatre have been added and there are plans for a visitors
centre and more specialised gardens.
The Hibiscus (Taman Bunga Raya; Jln Cenderawasih; 9am-6.30pm) F and Orchid (Taman Orkid; Jln
Cenderawasih; 9am-6.30pm) F gardens are adjacent to the Botanical Garden. Among the
800-odd species of orchid are Vandas and exotic hybrids. There's also a stall where you
can buy orchids. The hibiscus is Malaysia's national flower and the garden has more than
200 colourful hybrids with names such as Miniskirt and Hawaiian Girl that flower year-
round.
Other Attractions
Looking more like a mosque than a centre for scientific research, the National Planetarium
MAP GOOGLE MAP ( 2273 4303; www2.angkasa.gov.my/planetarium/ ; 53 Jln Perdana; gallery free, planet-
arium adult/child RM12/8; 9am-4.30pm Tue-Sun) is part of the National Space Agency. Parts of
