In 1888 Alfred Venning, Selangor State Treasurer, secured permission from British Resid-
ent Frank Swettenham to create a botanical garden around the small stream Sungai Bras
Bras. It took more than a decade to clear and landscape the area which today stretches
from Parliament House to the National Museum. The stream was dammed to give the park
Sydney Lake (Tasik Perdana) - hence the Lake Gardens. In 2011 the park was renamed
