WORTH A DETOUR
P RAMLEE MEMORIAL
In the 1950s and early '60s there was no bigger star in Malaysia than P Ramlee. The brief life of the charismatic
singer, actor and movie director, who died in 1973 from a heart attack aged only 44, is chronicled at the P Ram-
lee Memorial (Pustaka Peringatan P Ramlee; www.arkib.gov.my ; 2 Jln Dedap, Taman P Ramlee, Setapak;
10am-5pm Tue-Sun, closed noon-3pm Fri; monorail Titiwangsa, then taxi) F , a short taxi ride north of Titi-
wangsa.
The modest bungalow Ramlee shared with his wife Saloma, also a famous singer, has been remodelled to in-
corporate displays about the some 250-plus songs and 66 movies he starred in, along with the personal ephemera
such as handwritten lyrics and his piano. For RM3 you can dress up in copies of costumes worn by Ramlee and
Saloma, who had previously been married to Ramlee's costar and best friend AR Tompel.
Ramlee may be a legend today, with a road named after him in Kuala Lumpur, but when he died he was re-
portedly penniless, his style of music and movies having gone out of vogue. His final song, and title of an un-
made movie, was Tears of Kuala Lumpur (Air Mata di Kuala Lumpur) , its melancholic lyrics reflecting Ramlee's
feelings of failure and loss. His grave lies beside those of Saloma and Tompel in the Islamic Cemetery on Jln Am-
pang.

PARK
MAP GOOGLE MAP
(Taman Tasik Titiwangsa; Jln Tembeling; monorail Titiwangsa) This relaxing recreational park, a
10-minute walk east of the Titiwangsa monorail station, surrounds Lake Titiwangsa. As
well as walking and jogging paths and jolly boating on the lake (from RM3 per hour),
there are tennis courts (8am to 7pm/7pm to 11pm RM5/10 per hour), squash courts (8am
to 11pm RM6 per hour) and table tennis (RM2 per hour).
With its picture-postcard view of the city skyline, the park is a favourite spot for court-
ing Malaysian couples - and the religious police on the lookout for improper behaviour.
SENTUL WEST
( www.sentul-lifestyle.com/sentul_west.htm ; Jln Strachan, Sentul; Sentul) This private park is meant for
the residents of the development's condos and those that work in the former railway shed
buildings converted into modern offices. That said, KLPAC ( Click here ) is here and if
you're coming for a show or to patronise the restaurants and cafes in the park, save some
time to also partially explore the area (security guards are likely to stop you going too far).
