15.1 Introduction
Transition metal-catalyzed couplings 1 are well-established technologies that
have found widespread application in both academic and industrial settings.
Intense research in this area for the past four decades has resulted in an
outstanding variety of catalytic systems that allow for the formation of C-C
and C-heteroatom bonds under very mild conditions and that are
applicable to a very broad range of substrates. Since the 1990s, the number
of patents and publications in this area has grown exponentially and
couplings such as Suzuki-Miyaura, Heck, Sonogashira and Negishi have
been reported by the thousands. 2 Palladium is overwhelmingly the most
