6.1 Introduction
Over the last decade, transiton metal-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions have
become commonplace in small-molecule synthesis. The Nobel Committee
recognized the importance of such reactions by rewarding several of
the pioneering chemists who developed cross-coupling reactions with the
Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2010. The most widely used cross-coupling re-
actions, such as the Suzuki-Miyaura,

reactions,
typically involve the formation of carbon-carbon bonds. The formation of
carbon-nitrogen bonds via Buchwald-Hartwig aryl amination

is routinely
employed in both industrial and academic laboratories, whereas cross-
coupling reactions that construct carbon-oxygen and carbon-sulfur bonds
are employed less frequently.
