Pd-Phosphine Precatalysts for

3.1 Introduction
Over the last few decades, the real-world applications of palladium-catalyzed
cross-coupling have continuously expanded into many areas of chemistry,
such as the synthesis of natural products, 1 active pharmaceutical ingredients
(APIs), 2 agrochemicals, 3 monomers for polymers 4 and advanced materials
for electronic applications. 5 A historical perspective on the development of
cross-coupling reactions in the light of the 2010 Nobel Prize in Chemistry
was recently reviewed by our group in collaboration with Snieckus and co-
workers. 6 Concurrently, a more focused review on the theory behind the
preformed catalyst development was also published by our group. 7 There-
fore, in this chapter we have tried our best not to duplicate those efforts, but
to discuss the developments and applications of L 2 Pd- and LPd-based pre-
formed catalysts from a reactivity and selectivity point of view, while pro-
viding the theoretical understanding in making the catalyst selection for a
