Softly lit subway tiles, amiable barkeeps and seductive cocktails make a bewitching trio at
Weather Up. Sweet talk the staff over a Whizz Bang (scotch whisky, dry vermouth, house-
made grenadine, orange bitters and absinthe). Failing that, comfort yourself with some
seriously fine snacks, including spectacular oysters slapped with gin-martini granita.

Though we love the '40s-style 'gambling parlor' bar/restaurant, it's the downstairs 'opium
den' (open Thursday to Saturday) that gets our hearts racing. A Chinese-Portuguese fu-
sion of grub and liquor, both floors are a solid spot for late-night sipping and snacking, es-
pecially if you've got a soft spot for sizzle-on-the-tongue libations. (

When sipping means serious business, settle in at this uber-luxe 'library', its handsome
club chairs facing floor-to-ceiling, bottle-lined shelves. Go for top-shelf cognac, malt
scotch or vintage brandies (prices range from $9 to $235), expertly paired with nibbles
such as the house specialty Gougeres (Gruyere cheese puffs). Reservations are recommen-
ded. ( www.brandylibrary.com ; 25 N Moore St at Varick St;

28 Smith & Mills

Petite Smith & Mills ticks all the cool boxes: unmarked exterior, kooky industrial interior
and expertly crafted cocktails - the 'Carriage House' is a nod to the space's previous in-
carnation. Space is limited so head in early if you fancy kicking back on a plush ban-
quette. A seasonal menu spans light snacks to a particularly notable burger.
