New York City's tallest building upon completion in 1846, Trinity Church features a
280ft-high bell tower, a stained glass window over the altar and a small museum of histor-

Despite George Washington worshiping here after his inauguration in 1789, this classic
revival brownstone chapel found new fame in the aftermath of September 11. With the
World Trade Center destruction occurring just a block away, the mighty structure became
a spiritual support and volunteer center, movingly documented in its exhibition Unwaver-
ing Spirit: Hope & Healing at Ground Zero . ( www.trinitywallstreet.org ; Broadway at Fulton St;

New York's oldest - and possibly tiniest - public park is purportedly the spot where
Dutch settler Peter Minuit paid Native Americans the equivalent of $24 to purchase Man-
hattan Island. At its northern edge stands Arturo Di Modica's 7000lb bronze Charging
Bull , placed here permanently after it mysteriously appeared in front of the New York
Stock Exchange in 1989, two years after a market crash. (cnr Broadway & State St;
