Parks
New York's parks, gardens and squares are its collective backyards. The larger
parks are ideal for strolling or simply soaking up the sunshine, with plenty of
seating as well as kiosks and nearby cafes. Smaller squares offer serendipitous
moments of encounter, wonder and surprise.
Outdoor Activities
New Yorkers have perfected the art of turning their green spaces into places of recreation
and encounter. During the summer months you'll find outdoor film screenings,
Shakespeare performed in Central Park and concerts at Battery Park's Hudson River Park,
not to mention Lincoln Center Dance Nights.
Beyond Manhattan
If you're looking for sprawling acres of green space beyond Central Park, it's best to head
to Brooklyn. The borough's newest park is the 85-acre Brooklyn Bridge Park ( Click here ),
which has revitalized a once-barren stretch of shoreline, turning a series of abandoned piers
into public park land. Nearing completion, it will ultimately become the largest new park in
Brooklyn since Calvert Vaux and Frederick Olmsted designed the 585-acre Prospect Park
in the 19th century.
