In-Depth Information
Comedy
A good laugh is easy to find in the Big Apple, where comedians sharpen their stand-up
chops hoping to get scouted by a producer or agent. The best spots for some chuckles are
downtown around Chelsea and Greenwich Village.
Dance
Dance fans are spoiled for choice in this town, home to both the New York City Ballet (
Click here ) and the American Ballet Theatre ( Click here ) , plus modern dance venue the
Joyce Theater ( Click here ) . There are two major dance seasons: first in spring (March to
May), then in late fall (October to December).
Live Music
NYC is the country's capital of live music and just about every taste is catered for - check
out New York Magazine ( www.nymag.com ) and the Village Voice ( www.villagevoice.com ) for list-
ings.
Theater
From the legendary hit factories of Broadway to the scruffy black-box theaters that dot
downtown blocks, NYC boasts the full gamut of theater experiences. The term 'off-
Broadway' is not a geographical one - it simply refers to theaters that are smaller in size,
with less glitzy production budgets.
Top Tips
Cheaper, classical concerts can be scouted at various churches (oh the acoustics!) and smaller recital halls.
