In-Depth Information
Planning Your Visit
Most museums close at least one day a week, usually Monday, and sometimes Sunday
and/or Tuesday. Many stay open late one or more nights a week - often a Thursday or Fri-
day. You can save time at the most popular museums by purchasing tickets in advance on-
line.
Galleries
Chelsea is home to the highest concentration of art galleries in the entire city - and the
cluster continues to grow with each passing season. Most lie in the 20s, on the blocks
between Tenth and Eleventh Aves. For a complete guide and map, pick up Art Info's
Gallery Guide, available for free at most galleries, or visit chelseagallerymap.com. Wine-
and-cheese openings for new shows are typically held on Thursday evenings, while most
art houses tend to shutter their doors on Sundays and Mondays.
For Free
Many museums offer free or reduced admission once a month - check the museum web-
sites to find out when. Although most of the city's gallery openings occur on Thursday,
you'll find gratis events throughout the week.
Worth a Trip
Overlooking the Hudson River, the Cloisters Museum & Gardens ( www.metmuseum.org/cloisters ; Fort Tryon
Park; suggested donation adult/child $25/free; 10am-5pm; A to 190th St) is a curious mish-mash of
European monasteries. Built in the 1930s to house the Metropolitan Museum of Art's medieval treasures, it also
contains the beguiling 16th-century tapestry The Hunt of the Unicorn .
