23 Dead Poet

Skinny, mahogany-paneled Dead Poet pub has been a neighborhood favorite for over a dec-
ade, with a mix of locals and students nursing pints of Guinness. Appropriately, cocktails
are named after long-gone scribes, including a Jack Kerouac margarita ($12) and a Pablo
Neruda spiced rum sangria ($9). Funny, because we always pegged Neruda as a pisco sour
kind of guy. ( www.thedeadpoet.com ; 450 Amsterdam Ave, btwn 81st & 82nd Sts;

24 Ding Dong Lounge
BAR

It's hard to be too bad-ass in the Upper West, but this former crack den turned punk bar
makes a wholesome attempt by supplying graffiti-covered bathrooms to go with its
exposed-brick walls. Curiously, it also features an array of cuckoo clocks. It's popular with
Columbia students and guests from nearby hostels for its can-of-beer-and-a-shot combo
(only $7). ( www.dingdonglounge.com ; 929 Columbus Ave, btwn 105th & 106th Sts;
