This stark arrangement of gleaming Modernist temples contains some of Manhattan's most
important performance spaces: Avery Fisher Hall (home to the New York Philharmonic),
David H Koch Theater (site of the New York City ballet) and the iconic Metropolitan
Opera House, whose interior walls are dressed with brightly saturated murals by painter
Marc Chagall. Various other venues are tucked in and around the 16-acre campus, includ-
ing a theater, two film screening centers and the renowned Juilliard School. (

Founded in 1869, this classic museum contains a veritable wonderland of more than 30
million artifacts, including lots of menacing dinosaur skeletons, as well as the Rose Center
for Earth & Space, with its cutting-edge planetarium. From October through May, the mu-
seum is home to the Butterfly Conservatory, a glass house featuring 500-plus butterflies
from all over the world. (

Central Park's boathouse has a fleet of 100 rowboats plus three kayaks available for rent
from April to November. In the summer, there is also a Venetian-style gondola that seats up
to six (per 30 minutes $30). Bicycles are available from April to November. Rentals require
an ID and credit card and are weather permitting. Helmets included. (
