The Whitney makes no secret of its mission to provoke, which starts with its imposing Bru-
talist building, a structure that houses works by 20th-century masters Edward Hopper,
Jasper Johns, Georgia O'Keeffe and Mark Rothko. In addition to rotating exhibits, there is
a biennial on even years, an ambitious survey of contemporary art that rarely fails to gener-
ate controversy. The museum is set to move into a new Renzo Piano-designed structure in
the Meatpacking District in 2015. Check the website for updates. (

This spectacular art collection sits in a mansion built by prickly steel magnate Henry Clay
Frick, one of the many such residences that made up Millionaires' Row. The museum has
over a dozen splendid rooms displaying masterpieces by Titian, Vermeer, Gilbert Stuart, El
Greco and Goya. A demure Portico Gallery displays decorative works and sculpture. The
museum is generally not crowded and feels refreshingly intimate. Children under 10 are not
admitted. (
