superb array of Ottoman textiles (Gallery 459), a medieval-style Moroccan court (Gallery
456) and an 18th-century room from Damascus (Gallery 461). Individual highlights in-
clude the lavishly colored Indian painting A King Offers to Make Amends to a Bereaved
Mother (Gallery 465). Attributed to the artist Miskin and dating back to the late 16th cen-
tury, it's especially interesting for its fusion of Islamic and Western aesthetics.
American Wing
In the museum's northwest corner, the revamped American galleries showcase a wide
variety of decorative and fine art from throughout US history, including Hudson River
School masterpieces. The rich hues of Louis Comfort Tiffany's leaded glass grace several
galleries, his works including Window (Gallery 702), Dogwood , and Magnolias and
Irises (Gallery 743). Highlights from the colonial portraiture collection include John
Singleton Copley's 18th-century Mrs. John Winthrop (Gallery 748), the painting's reflect-
ive tabletop attesting to the artist's technical prowess. Hard to miss is Emanuel Leutze's
massive canvas of Washington Crossing the Delaware (Gallery 760), while lovers of
landscape painting will lose themselves in the rhythmic paintings of Childe Hassam,
among them Surf , Celia Thaxter's Garden , Isles of Shoals , Maine and The Water
Garden (Gallery 769). Nearby hangs John Singer Sargent's unbearably sexy Madame X
(Gallery 771), a painting laden with more self-confidence and attitude than a Hollywood
gala.
