30 Little Branch
COCKTAIL BAR

If it weren't for the casual bouncer dressed in slacks and suspenders, you'd never guess that
one of New York's best drinking dens lurked beyond that plain metal door. When you get
the go-ahead to enter, sink into a basement scene straight out of the '20s, complete with
squeaky tunes and beautiful, old-school cocktails. (

Coffee snobs hail this cultish Portland roaster, its small-batch beans and artisan brewing
techniques propelling NYC's coffee scene evolution. While we love the coffered ceiling
and walnut bar, its the Joe that draws the crowds - velvety, complex and aromatic. If you're
really lucky, you might score one of the few tables, usually colonized by laptop-toting
types. (30 W 8th St at MacDougal St;

Twenty-somethings love this candelit gastropub for strong, inventive libations (try the
canela margarita, with cinnamon-infused tequila) and hearty nosh. Squeeze around the
small, packed bar or try for a booth out the back. Either way, slurp on $1 oysters and happy
hour drink specials early in the night, or tuck into more substantial gut-lining dishes, many
made with vegetables from the aeroponic rooftop garden six flights up. (141 W 10th St btwn
