7.2 ALD for Catalysis - a Literature Overview
Figure 7.12 shows the annual number of ALD publications related to cata-
lysis z and reveals a growing interest in ALD for catalytic applications. This
section presents an overview of selected papers on this topic. It does not
intend to provide a complete literature review, but rather aims to give a
general flavor of the various ALD processes, supports and catalytic reactions
that have been considered. It also provides a context for the case studies
presented in Section 7.3. Early studies that were conducted from the mid
1990s until the early 2000s are discussed in Section 7.2.1, while Sections
7.2.2 to 7.2.5 cover more recent work.

7.2.1 Early Work on Catalyst Preparation by ALD
The suitability of ALD for coating porous high surface area materials was
realized by Suntola and co-workers in the early 1990s. 3,8,46,56-58 Since then,
ALD has been reported to produce active catalysts for a variety of purposes.
Extensive work in this field has been carried out by the group of Prof. Outi
Krause at the Laboratory of Industrial Chemistry, Aalto University School of
Chemical Technology. 8 Co catalysts were, for example, synthesized on
.
