In-Depth Information
You may have heard of Glacier National Park. Well, all those pristine forests, alpine
meadows, rugged mountains, lakes, and 700 miles of trails used to be Blackfeet
land. The tribe sold the 1,013,572 acres of this amazing national park to the U.S.
government in 1896 for a paltry $1.5 million, 25 times less than the price tag on
Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston's former Beverly Hills home.
After the local newspaper wrote a story about their unusual honeymoon, people started
hounding them for info: How can we do the same thing? In 1984, Bud and Michelle estab-
lished Global Volunteers to provide people with an opportunity to make a difference in the
lives of others around the globe. Since then, they have hooked up more than 20,000 volun-
teers with hundreds of projects, ranging from building schools in Ghana to caring for orphans
in Romania to teaching English to kids in China.
Individual costs for Global Volunteer trips range from $795 for this weeklong program
on the Blackfeet Reservation to as much as $2,750 for international programs. The tax-de-
ductible fee includes food, lodging, and ground transportation. Volunteers pay their own way
to their destinations.
