CHAPTER 2
volunteer vacations
We've GOT to make noise in greater amounts!
So, open your mouth, lad! For every voice counts!
—Horton, in Dr. Seuss's Horton Hears a Who
M ost folks think they want to get something from a vacation—time off from work, a break
from their normal ho-hum, maybe a tan. But here's the deal: What you really want from a va-
cation is to give something.
I hate to be the one to break it to you, but you know you don't really care about five-star
hotels and Coppertone tans and exclusive tours of the French Riviera. Not really. You care
about what happens to our children. To our oceans. To the great big, beautiful dream of free-
dom and wildness and a chicken in every pot. You long to make the world a better place.
Granted, it's a cliché, but deep down, you know it's the truth. It's that little voice that con-
tinually nags at you anytime you stop long enough to listen: “Isn't there something more?”
