In-Depth Information
One of Penland's most unique features is the daily movement classes that, according to
Penland philosophy, keep the artistic spirit loose and free and eliminate tension, which no
one wants showing up in their work. These classes might include yoga, tai chi, volleyball, or
hikes to Bailey's Peak.
Students stay in dorms and old log cabins, none of which have phones, TVs, or air-con-
ditioning. Three meals are served each day. The one-, two-, and two-and-a-half-week classes
in summer run $397 to $877 ($566 to $1,250 for glassblowing), with rooms and meals ran-
ging from $337 to $818 for dorms that house three to ten students and $1,058 to $2,569 for
a single room with private bath. The eight-week fall and spring sessions cost $3,024 ($3,947
for the glassblowing workshop); room and meal plans cost between $2,551 for dorm rooms
and $3,185 for a single with private bath. For those who prefer to stay off campus, sum-
mer workshop meals can be arranged for $211 to $512 for all meals or $72 to $175 for just
lunches; in the fall and spring, it's $1,287 for three meals a day or $540 for lunches only.
Also, be advised that there is a materials fee for most workshops.
