The rustic Heartwood Schoolhouse is located on ten acres in the Berkshire Hills of west-
ern Massachusetts. Built by the staff and students in 1978 to 1979, the schoolhouse contains
Heartwood's office, a classroom, a greenhouse, a woodworking shop with all the equipment
you'll need, a 500-plus-book library devoted to housebuilding, and the dining area where de-
licious home-cooked lunches are served up.
Students pay $1,150 each, or $2,100 per couple, for a two-week course that includes
morning lectures and afternoons doing hands-on work—for example, to review a morning's
lesson on framing, students might lay rafters in a nearby house. The one-week seminars run
$600, or $1,100 per couple. Upon enrollment, the school can supply a list of accommodations
in the area, ranging from rustic campgrounds to cozy B&Bs.
