Just visiting Interlochen's 1,200-acre North Woods campus is stimulating. It's situated in a
magnificent stand of tall pines between two glacial lakes—the “lochen” that Interlochen is
“inter” are Green Lake and Duck Lake, or Wahbekaness and Wahbekanetta in the language
of the Ottawa who once lived in the area. The campus is southwest of Traverse City near
the famed Leelanau Peninsula, home of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, a 35-mile
strip of Lake Michigan coastline featuring immense sand dunes on which to climb and play.
