INTERLOCHEN CENTER FOR THE ARTS
master the clarinet at a famous music camp
INTERLOCHEN, MICHIGAN
My whole life, I've wanted to come play at Interlochen. Now I can kick
the bucket.
—Fred Luety, camper at Interlochen
8 | Even though your trumpet case is gathering dust in the front closet, you've never quite
given up that dream you had of playing first chair in band. Well, guess what? It's never too
late.
Interlochen, a famous music camp and school for kids, hosts a five-day band camp in
June for the over-18 set, too. For adults, it offers a twice-yearly composers institute, a six-day
chamber music institute in August, and an instrument-making workshop in June where you'll
spend five days learning about the origins and history of musical instruments from around the
world, the nature of materials, and their resonant qualities and methods of manipulation. In
August, they even host the New Horizons Music Camp, an organization that reconnects adults
who used to be musically active with music-making. And, as a bona fide grownup, you won't
be required to wear the dark blue pants and baby-blue button-down shirt that younger Inter-
lochen students are required to wear.
