CUNARD LINE
revel in a luxury spa at sea
ABOARD THE QUEEN MARY 2
There is always a buzz about this ship wherever we go.
—Benjamin Lyons, second officer aboard the Queen Mary 2
100 | Not since the Titanic had there been as much fanfare surrounding the launch of a new
ship as when the majestic Queen Mary 2 made its maiden voyage from Southampton, Eng-
land, to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, in January 2004. Name a superlative and it was being ban-
died about: longest, tallest, widest, most expensive. Everyone was talking about the QM2 's
ornate planetarium, the first at sea; its 8,000-volume library, the largest at sea; and its college,
the most prestigious at sea, staffed by personnel from Oxford University. Those are all great
reasons to board this larger-than-life ship. But one of the perks you might have missed amid
all the hoopla is the Queen Mary 2 's posh spa.
Run by Canyon Ranch, the QM2 's lush, two-deck spa could easily stand (make that
“float”) on its own. Measuring in at 20,000 square feet, it has 24 treatment rooms, huge fitness
and locker rooms, saunas, aromatic steam rooms, and a breathtaking Aqua Therapy Centre
with a waterfall and neck-massage fountains.
A staff of more than 50, trained in the same luxurious pampering as Canyon Ranch's land-
based spas, does the massage and treatment honors. You can get everything from a classic
Swedish or sports massage to Thai or Ayurvedic massages, as well as Rasul Rituals, a Canyon
Ranch signature treatment that involves mud, oils, and steam.
You can also get facials, body scrubs, complete rundowns on your fitness profile, and a
personal trainer who will strongly suggest that you don't visit (at least not daily) all ten of the
ship's amazing restaurants. Not to worry—the ship's main dining rooms offer a special spa
cuisine for those who are watching their figures.
