In-Depth Information
Maeder began offering the gourmet rafting trips ten years after he moved from Switzer-
land to Texas. He missed the mountains (“I didn't know Texas had mountains until I visited
Big Bend”) and being outdoors. In fact, he bemoans the fact that some people have never left
the city nor seen the Milky Way.
The three days of bacchanalian revelry start at the historic Lajitas River Crossing
and meander 21 miles along the Rio Grande. “Everybody knows food tastes better out-
doors…even if it falls in the sand,” says Greg Henington, owner of the Far Flung Outdoor
Center. The three-day rafting trips (Henington and his crew jokingly call them “float and
bloat”) are staged in February, March, April, and October; cost $775; and include seven gour-
met meals, tents, rafts, and everything else you could possibly need.
