WANNA SAVE THE ANWR?
It might be different if there were enough oil in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge
to drill ourselves to self-sufficiency. But there's not. At best, we might win a few
years more of petroleum dependency. Here are seven things you can do that, if
enough of us followed suit, would save more oil in one year than the ANWR could
produce in 50.
Skip one car ride a week. The average American drives more than 250
miles each week. Replace a weekly 20-mile car trip with telecommuting,
biking, or combining errands and you'll reduce your annual emissions of
the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide by nearly a thousand pounds.
Carpool. Thirty-three million gallons of gas would be saved (not to mention
reducing air pollution) if we would all simply commit to having a party
every morning on the way to work. After all, it's not a party until you have
at least two.
Bike or walk if your trip is less than 2 miles.
Take public transportation.
Leave your car in the garage for the weekend.
Consider trading in your SUV for a gas/electric hybrid. Think they're not
cool? Cameron Diaz drives one.
Push the government to impose higher CAFE (corporate average fuel eco-
nomy) standards that require new cars to achieve designated gas mileage
