TAKE THAT, PAPA!
Ernest Hemingway wasn't a fan of writing instruction. But it should be pointed out
that this great writer had the benefit of one-on-one tutorials with Gertrude Stein,
Ford Maddox Ford, and others who helped set him on the right path. Even the most
promising writers can use sound advice every now and again. Here are four other
writers' workshops worth mentioning:
Aspen Summer Words Writing Retreat and Literary Festival. Sometimes called
the “Sundance Film Festival of literary publishing,” this three-decade-old tradition
brings first-rate writers to a town that has been among the writer friendliest since
Hunter Thompson showed up close to a half century ago. Two- to four-day retreats
range from $150 to $375. Aspen Writer's Foundation, 110 E. Hallam Street, Suite
116, Aspen, CO 81611, 970-925-3122, http://aspenwriters.org.
Community of Writers at Squaw Valley. Since 1969, the writing community of
Squaw Valley near Lake Tahoe has mounted summer workshops in fiction, nonfic-
tion, screenwriting, playwriting, poetry, and nature writing. Admissions are based
on submitted manuscripts. The six-day workshops are $700 to $750, dinners in-
cluded. Houses and condominiums rent to conference attendees for an additional
fee. Squaw Valley Community of Writers, P.O. Box 1416, Nevada City, CA 95959
(winter) or P.O. Box 2352, Olympic Valley, CA 96146 (summer), 530-470-8440,
