Sundance Resort. Robert Redford's rustic-chic getaway sits on 6,000 protected acres of
pristine wilderness. As he said when he first bought the property in 1969, “We'll…develop
very little and preserve a great deal.” Although it's certainly a ski resort, it feels more like an
artist colony. In fact, it's so imbued with creative energy that you might just feel tempted to
pen a poem or knock out a song. And at the on-site Art Shack, you can get some help doing
just that. Visiting artists offer two-hour workshops in glassblowing, jewelry making, photo-
graphy, creative writing, and pottery.
The Spa at Sundance was inspired by the Sioux concept of Hocoka —a sacred environ-
ment for the restoration and healing of the body and spirit. In the natural wood, softly lit
treatment rooms, you'll get such treatments as a cornmeal body blanket where you'll be ex-
foliated and detoxified with ground cornmeal and organic honey from the Sundance farm be-
fore being wrapped in a warm Sioux story blanket. Overriding all that Sundance has to offer
is an ecologically sensitive philosophy. Everything is built to blend with nature. The water
glasses at the Foundry Grill restaurant are recycled wine bottles. The Tree Room, the upscale
“earth to table” gourmet restaurant, is wrapped around an old-growth pine tree. The soaps in
the rooms are all-organic products of the Sundance Farms, as are most of the herbs, spices,
and foods used in the restaurants.
Rooms during the winter season start at $246. A four-bedroom home during the holiday
season is $1,656.
