and Wolfe, who was also traveling with the Pranksters, figured it was the
perfect name for his book.
Everyone at Woodstock: It was Wavy who got up on the Woodstock stage
in 1969 and famously announced: “What we have in mind is breakfast in
bed for 400,000.”
But in June, the week before Camp Winnarainbow kicks off its official summer sched-
ule, Wavy Gravy—the fast-quipping 1960s icon who emceed all three Woodstock rock con-
certs—begins the season with a circus and performing arts camp for grown-ups. Among the
offerings are classes in stilt walking, unicycling, trapeze, clowning, miming, acting, and im-
provisational theater. According to the former Grateful Dead clown, “Adult camp is exactly
like kids camp, only we don't make you brush your teeth.”
Every morning at 8, Wavy circles the tepees with a conch shell wake-up call. After
breakfast and an inspiring Wavy-read passage from, say, Walt Whitman or the Tao Te Ching
or even his own 1992 autobiography, Something Nice for a Change, it's off to practice im-
prov or maybe psychotic Shakespeare or contact juggling.
The six-day adult camp takes place in mid-June and costs $550 for the week or $100 per
day. Kids can attend from one to nine weeks for $750 to $6,138.
