Devil's Thumb Ranch. Located in a beautiful meadow with stunning views of the mountains
at the Continental Divide, this ranch, too, was on the stagecoach route before the transcon-
tinental railroad opened in 1869. The current owners of this “4,000 acres of raw Colorado,”
as they call it, are winning lots of eco-awards, including one from the Environmental Protec-
tion Agency, for their commitment to keeping this amazing ranch in Fraser Valley as natural
and pristine as possible. Not only did Suzanne and Bob Fanch import the Broad Axe Barn
(which serves as the spa and the activities center) from a farm in Indiana, thereby eliminat-
ing the need to cut down additional trees, but the new lodge and the 16 luxury log cabins
are geothermally heated, using the Earth's own natural heat. The Ranch House Restaurant,
a converted 1937 homestead cabin, uses organic, free-range meats and, whenever possible,
locally grown produce for its unique artisan menu. You'll feast on such specialties as ante-
lope satay or beef tenderloin with chanterelle mushroom sauce and drink rare wines from the
barrel-doored wine cellar.
The ranch itself provides the quintessential outdoor mountain playground, with 60
miles of cross-country ski trails, 13 miles of snowshoe trails, a unique horsemanship and
horseback-riding program, fly-fishing lessons, mountain biking, ice-skating, and even “ski-
joring,” an up-and-coming sport where Rover pulls you on your skis. The new lodge,
modeled after Mount Hood's famous Timberline Lodge, has a theater and old-fashioned
bowling alley.
Long recognized as one of the country's premier Nordic resorts, Devil's Thumb offers a
Thanksgiving Nordic Ski Camp every year that covers everything from technique, training,
and racing to video analysis and waxing clinics. It's led by the University of Denver's Nordic
coach Wolf Wallendorf and Subaru Factory team skier Eric Meyer.
Ranch Creek Spa, an elegant spa that recently opened, offers such treatments as Rocky
Mountain rain therapy, body scrubs, aqua-latte baths, soaks, and hot stone massages. Prices
vary for all spa treatments, beginning at $45 for a Swedish massage, to $290 for a spa pack-
age. Lodging prices begin at $145, depending upon season.
