Paskowitz Surf Camp. The Paskowitzes of San Clemente, California, have been called the
von Trapp family of surfing. The patriarch, Doc Dorian Paskowitz, an M.D. who is now in
his late 80s, started a seven-day, sleepover surf camp in 1972 at a beach just south of Richard
Nixon's former residence in San Clemente. It was the first school of its kind. His nine kids,
as well as his wife, Juliette, a former opera singer, joined him in offering these party-like
camps, which included three meals a day, camping on the beach, and all the surfing you could
handle. Son Izzy took over the business a few years ago, but the rest of the family is still
involved—including Doc, who lifeguards and loves to tell stories. The Paskowitz clan now
offers seven-day summer camps at San Diego's Pacific Beach ($1,250, including all meals
and tent accommodations) and at Cabo San Lucas in Baja California (a more lavish version
complete with hotels for $2,900). In addition, they have two-and-a-half-day clinics at Mon-
tauk, New York, on the tip of Long Island ($900).

ment seminar, incorporate yoga, massage, and daily surf lessons. “Women bond in a special
way,” Sanders says. “I especially love to see these corporate women show up. Within 24
